Monday 18th May
Dear Parents,
This week is mental health awareness week. During these challenging times it is important for us all to acknowledge that we have moments of feeling a little bored and fed up from time to time. In school the children regularly discuss their thoughts and feelings during worship, RE lessons and circle time. The children know that it is healthy to talk about our feelings with other people.
BBC Newsround has a great clip about Mental Health week : https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/52557800
Mental Health Awareness Week 2020 is a chance for the UK to focus on mental health. This year’s theme is kindness, with the week running from 18 – 24 May. The focus on kindness is a response to the coronavirus outbreak, which is having a big impact on people’s mental health.
Some people have mental health conditions like depression or anxiety, which means they have feelings that won’t go away and which start to really affect day-to-day life.
Mark Rowland, chief executive of the Mental Health Foundation, said: “We want to use Mental Health Awareness Week to celebrate the thousands of acts of kindness that are so important to our mental health. And we want to start a discussion on the kind of society we want to shape as we emerge from this pandemic.”
It is helpful to ask other people how they are feeling and consider how they are feeling too. I am sure lots of our children miss a hug or a kiss from a grandparent or other close friend or relative. Empathy is part of our emotional well being and Year 2 are working hard to consider physical and mental well being, making sure that it is a positive topic and not one to be avoided.
Have you carried out any acts of kindness recently?
We would love the children in Year 2 to carry out an act of kindness. Your son/daughter could help out with a task at home, make a card for a friend or relative or bake a cake for somebody. Please send me the photographs and we can share them on the Y2 gallery. If you would like more information about Mental Health Awareness Week, feel free to look on the website below:

This week is Christian Aid Week.
The children attending school enjoyed learning about a Dr Khan, currently working in a refugee camp in Bangladesh. The children discussed the challenges he might face. Then we talked about Dr Khan, who is currently using his God given talents to support the refugees.
During circle time, the children thanked God for the members of our community who are using their God given talents during the pandemic. We thanked God for the key workers. The children mentioned police officers, nurses, social workers, doctors, supermarket staff, food delivery drivers, truck drivers, pharmacists, probation officers, members of the armed forces, teachers and teaching assistants and finally Post Office workers. The children enjoyed writing prayers and celebrated how members of our community are working together during the Coronavirus outbreak. Our prayers are on the prayer tree in the hall.
If you have time, take a look on the Christian Aid website and consider how the world in uniting in love during the international pandemic. Perhaps your son/ daughter would like to write a prayer too.

We are delighted with all the wonderful photographs and videos of home learning. The children are having fun and working hard. Thank you.
We’d love the children in Year 2 to show their support for the NHS and other key workers for their dedication. Here’s an opportunity to design their very own external banner, thanking the NHS and other key workers for their dedication. Five winners will have their design recreated and produced to proudly display on your school gates!

RE, worship and prayer
Blackburn Diocese have kindly provided lots of resources for families to access from home. The children love attending worship in school so please have a look at this link:
www.churchofengland.org/faith-action/faith-home/i-am-parent
We’ve enjoyed singing along to some of our favourite hymns at home this afternoon. Would your son/daughter like to sing a hymn on video for our Y2 gallery?
Blackburn Diocese have a range of Bible Podlets Podcasts for adults to do with primary aged children. The theme is Bible Transformers. It focuses on people in the Bible who were transformed by Jesus.

If your son/daughter would like to write a prayer for us to share together, please send me a copy and we can add the prayers to our gallery.
Science and Well being
BBC Bitesize has some amazing resources. If you would like to try our some of the Science lessons, we’d love to see the outcomes. The well being section is also very good. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/tags/z7s22sg/year-2
We’d love to see photographs of any PE and sporting activities, Art, Design and baking.

Dear Parents,
Hope you all managed to have a good Easter and that you are keeping safe and well. It has been really good to see photos of the Viking topic work that the children did last term.
This term I am going to split topic into History and Geography and I would like you to use the fantastic homeschool lessons being produced by BBC Bitesize. You can go to the link here:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/primary
There is a short history and geography lesson each week for Year 2 with information, videos and exciting activities. I think it is a really good resource and will continue to give your child a good grounding in these subjects.
Please email me to show me any writing, drawing or creative work your children do. It is always lovely to see work and updates on how your child is getting on.
Music
I have sent everyone an email with log in information and details on how to access music sessions with Charanga, the programme we enjoy using in school. There are weekly lessons for you to do at home. You can visit the site using the link below;
Take care,
Mrs Woods

Wednesday 1st April
Dear Parents,
I hope you are well. Thank you for all the wonderful photographs of children’s work and achievements. They really cheer us up. Please check your e-mails for the most up to date information about home learning, activities for Easter and updates.
It is very important to continue to read with your son/daughter every day. Even ten minutes a day will make a real difference. Please continue to record daily reading tasks in your son/daughter’s homework diary. We are happy for your child to read books from home. If you would like access to reading books, there are two amazing websites which contain age appropriate books online. They are completely free too.
Oxford Owls also have lots of reading books including Oxford Reading Tree (KS1) https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/
Collins have also created a parent sign in for free access to their Big Cats reading scheme.
https://collins.co.uk/pages/big–cat-ebooks
This week we would like the children to complete pages 32-37 in the reading book and pages 32, 33, 34 and 35 in the reasoning book.
Feel free to contact us if you have any questions or queries.
Please continue to keep in touch and enjoy learning together.
Kind Regards
H Smith and J Woods
Wednesday 24th March 2020
Dear Parents,
I hope you are enjoying working on the home learning packs together.
Please encourage your child to complete a handwriting exercise each day. The Penpals resource is for handwriting. The children usually spend ten minutes a day on this. Encourage your child to write in pencil, use tall and short letters and join with care.
In the home learning pack for Year 2, we’ve also included reading, writing, word level, maths, science, craft and problem solving activities.
Please ensure that your child logs on to the mathletics website each day and completes at least one task. This could be one of the tasks set by me, or live mathletics to improve arithmetic skills. In addition to mathletics tasks, I would like your son/daughter to complete one of the maths exercises in the home learning pack.
For English, the children are required to complete one task a day too. Feel free to select a reading comprehension task from the pack, a word level challenge or start on the non-chronological report about Easter symbols. Details on a separate e-mail.
We’ve included lined paper for the writing tasks. Talking together about the writing task will help with ideas. Please encourage your son/daughter to write in good sentences using joining words (and, but, so, because, or, if, so or when), commas in lists, adjectives and varied openers. Neat handwriting and accurate use of capital letters and full stops is essential.
In addition to daily Maths and English, I’d like the children to complete one other task. Please select from the other activities in the home learning pack. If you are feeling creative, your might like to create a scrap book about Easter Symbols. This links with our RE unit of work. Alternatively, spend some time on Mrs Wood’s topic challenge based on the Vikings.
Once your child has completed the tasks in the home learning pack, please use the marking guide to check the work together and give your child feedback.
Education City and Purple Mash also have excellent resources to reinforce learning at home.
If you would like to contact me about any of the tasks, I will try to reply to your queries before 5 pm each day from Monday to Thursday inclusive. Feel free to contact me by e-mail. My e-mail address is h.smith@grimsargh-st-michaels.lancs.sch.uk.
Mrs Wood’s e mail address is j.woods.@grimsargh-st-michaels.lancs.sch.uk. She teaches on Thursdays and Fridays.
Thank you for your continued support.
Kind Regards
H Smith
Home learning information from Mrs Woods
Topic
Please carry on with our Viking topic. Record information in your Viking passports if you like. Don’t worry if you don’t have the passport or want to work in a different way- your topic can be as creative as you want it to be. Examples of areas to research include Viking timeline, invasion and warriors, houses and homes and Viking gods and beliefs. The children have already really enjoyed this topic and really impressed me with their work, so have fun and find out about the areas that interest them.
Please email me for any questions and support.
BBC Bitesize and BBC Teach are both good resources. They are aimed at KS2 but a lot of the resources are accessible to Year 2.
