Home Learning: Week Beginning 1st February 2021

Hi Year One!

What a lovely week we had as we began our Pirate themed English work! It has been great to see how excited you have been and I can’t wait to see where our learning goes this week.

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week and to mark this, we will be focussing some of our Wider Curriculum work in this area. I hope you’ve enjoyed our Rainbow Reading Challenge and the story that is posted in the afternoon. It’s National Storytellers Week this week- Who is your favourite author?

Ahoy, Me Hearties!


Watch the video of me rereading Pirates Love Underpants.

Think about the diary of Samuel Pepys that we looked at last week, and what a diary is.

Watch my second video of me modelling today’s writing task then have a go yourself.

Task- Write the Captain’s diary- imagine you are the captain and want to write in your diary about all the things that have happened over the last day. What would you write?

Think about what happened, when it happened, how you felt, what you did.

Remember time words, features of a good sentence including conjunctions, and reading your sentence back to check it. You might like to draw the best or the worst part of the day at the bottom.

You can do this in books or on this sheet if you’d rather- English sheet Monday


Think back to the story Pirates Love Underpants.

The Captain and his crew were not happy that the other pirate crew had got to the golden underpants first and would like to put up some posters to help to catch them.

Look at a ‘wanted poster’ example.

Task- Create a ‘wanted poster’ for the other pirate crew. Using captions, add key facts about the crew and why they are wanted.

Ensure posters are eye catching and contain enough facts to help people know who they are looking for.



Today we’re going to begin to re-write the story Pirates Love Underpants with a twist!

Before we do this, we need to think about the key parts of the story- characters, events, setting.

What are we going to change? Look at my video then complete the task.

Task- Write the new story, remembering to use time words, adjectives, conjunctions, phonics sounds, good letter formation. Read your story to someone at home. What do they think? If you want to use a worksheet, you can use this one- English sheet Thursday

For each day, watch the video then complete the task. Upload what you have done to your Seesaw journal and I’ll have a look at how you have got on and give you some feedback too.

Tuesday- Mental Health Awareness Week-

We’re going through a really tricky time at the moment and although it’s hard to see things back to ‘normal’, we can use hope to help us look forward to better times. Have a go at this activity where you can create a jar full of things you’re looking forward to doing again. You can add to this whenever you think of something else. Then, when a little more normality resumes, you can look in your jar for ideas of things to do!

Sometimes we lose things, I know I do all the time! But how does that make us feel?

Consider these questions with a grown up

  • Why is it upsetting to lose something?
  • Have you ever lost anything but then found it later? How did it feel to find it again?
  • Have you ever lost anything but never found it again? How did that feel? Were you able to replace the item?

Read the story Harold Loses Geoffrey- Harold loses Geoffrey – Story sheet

Task- On one half of a piece of paper draw a picture of yourself when you have lost something. Draw your face showing your emotions. Write some key words describing those emotions. On the other half of the paper draw yourself when you have found something. How does your face show your emotions now? Write some key words here too to describe your emotions.
