Our goal for the languages curriculum is that children gain confidence with listening, speaking, reading and writing French through our three ‘big ideas’.

• Phonics – the key components of the sound-writing relationship.

• Grammar – the essential building blocks required to create simple sentences independently.

• Communication – the ability to understand what someone is saying and respond, both verbally or in written form.

Learning a language is a liberation from insularity and provides an essential opening to other cultures.

We aim to give our children a high-quality languages education which fosters pupils’ curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world.  Our teaching aims to enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.

French update: September 2023

In the previous academic year we had great success with moving all of our KS2 classes on to a new French scheme.  We have found our children are much more confident with their language learning and they are better equipped with the grammar, phonics and vocabulary needed to compose their own French sentences and phrases verbally and in writing, and understand others when listening or reading.

After seeking advise all key stage 2 classes started at Year 3 level last year.  This year, Years 4, 5 and 6 are working on the Year 4 part of the scheme, with our Year 3s enjoying learning French from the Year 3 scheme. 

This Year we will continue to have visits from Reading University who are exploring making changes to the key stage 2 curriculum.  We are excited to be a pilot school in their 4 year project, and that our children are helping with data which may shape our future curriculum.
